Shirley Lu Lohorn, age 88, of Lapeer, passed away on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at Marlette Hospice House.
Shirley was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 4, 1934 to Joseph and Alma (Parker) Neal. On March 23, 1957 she married William Lohorn in Keeneyville, Illinois. She then attended and graduated from Wheaton College Nursing School as a RN in 1957. She worked in nursing homes over her career, taking time off to raise their children. Shirley was a devout Christian. She was very involved with her church. She became a Sunday school teacher, an Awana leader and faithfully was a part of the Hunter Creek Community Church family for over 50 years. She enjoyed reading her Bible, gardening flowers, vegetables and even pretty weeds. Shirley loved spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed canning, quilting, sewing, camping, hiking, softball, volleyball, sunrises, sunsets and anything taking her outdoors. She was a competitive game player; she was a champion Chinese Checker player (it was rare to beat her).
Shirley is survived by: her daughters, Joyce (Dyran) Podvin, Maggie (Dave) Eady, Shelley (Steve) Braxton; sons, Rob (Christina), and Rick Lohorn; grandchildren, Eric (Michelle) McRee, Kelly (Alivia) McRee, Will (Michael) McRee, Sarah (Shaun) Brewer, Lacey Ekstrom, Erin (Tim) Pasternak, Joel Eady, Jeremy (Sam) Eady, Janette Lohorn (Bill), Laura Lohorn, Kayla (Jamie) Cyr, Riley Lohorn, Johnny (Jessica) Braxton, Jessica (Cody) Schwartz, Autumn Lohorn and Justin Lohorn; great-grandchildren, Kendall, Blake, Sydney, Logan, Kaylee, Taylor, Brayden, Peyton, Piper, Sammi, Keegan, Finley, Quinn, Matthew, Carter and Allyson; siblings, Brian (Lynn) Neal and Jackie (Gary) Arnold.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her parents; sisters, Carol Lee and Betty; and brother-in-law Henry.
The family will be present for visitation on Thursday, December 8th from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Blackburn Chapel-Martin Funeral Home, North Branch. Shirley will lie in state Friday, December 9th at Hunters Creek Community Church (2471 Metamora Rd., Lapeer) from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM with the funeral at 11:00 AM. Pastor Joel Caminiti will be officiating. Shirley will be laid to rest with her husband at Hunters Creek Cemetery in Lapeer.
