Leroy Archie Mabery, of Lapeer, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, November 14, 2025. He was born April 2, 1942, in Deerfield Township to Archie and Ruth “Trato” Mabery, and grew up on the family farm. A 1960 graduate of North Branch High School, Leroy excelled academically and as a multi-sport athlete.
Leroy earned his B.A. from Central Michigan University, where he met the love of his life, Hazel (McCuaig). They married on July 23, 1966, and soon began their greatest adventure together as Peace Corps Volunteers in El Salvador. Their three years there shaped their lives with a deep appreciation for the Spanish language, culture, and service.
After returning to Michigan, Leroy completed a master’s degree and later a Ph.D. from Michigan State University while building a distinguished 33-year career in public education as a teacher, coach, and administrator, most notably with Lake Orion Community Schools. He was devoted to expanding opportunities for students, families, and adult learners.
For over 40 years, Leroy and Hazel made Lapeer their home, where he remained active in community leadership and enjoyed being close to family and his rural roots. In retirement, they also found joy in their winters at Lazy River Village in North Port, Florida, where Leroy served in several volunteer roles and formed lasting friendships.
Leroy’s passion for history and travel led him to visit 70 countries, all 50 states, and countless historic sites, but his greatest pride was his family.
He is survived by Hazel; sons Jon (Rose), Cory (Mellisa), and Chad (Maggie); beloved eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; sister Carolyn (Asa) Thompson; and brother Robert (Karen). He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Larry Sr. and Ronald.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on December 14 at 1 pm at the Sweet Fellowship Hall, 473 W. Barnes Lake Road, Columbiaville.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to North Branch Area Schools, P.O. Box 3620, North Branch MI 48461 or Lake Orion Community Schools 495 E. Scripps Rd. Orion Township, MI, 48360.
