George William Johnson, 84, formerly of Grayling and Lapeer, passed away on March 2, 2024. George was born on October 24, 1939, in Fostoria, MI, the son of Victor and Nora (Kennedy) Johnson. George graduated from Mayville High School. He proudly served in the United States Army. George married Christine Chickonoski in Lapeer on February 11, 1972. George owned and operated George and Vic’s Towing in Lapeer for many years. He later drove for Crawford County Transportation. He loved the outdoors, duck hunting, fishing, and riding around the side roads enjoying the scenery.
George is survived by his children, Darryl (Debi) Johnson, Kay (Robert) Marsman, Sara Johnson, grandchildren, Noah, Kaiden, Caleb, Tim, Grace, Brendan, sister, Norma Thomas, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Christine, his parents, brother Victor Johnson, and sister Myrtle Ellis.
A family gathering will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024, 10:00 A.M.-11:00 A.M. at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 A.M. Rev. Richard Treml will be officiating. George will be buried next to his wife at SS Peter & Paul Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the North Branch American Legion Post 457.
