Delbert Myers Obituary

Delbert Dennis Myers - age 93 of North Branch, MI - passed away on September 2, 2022. Delbert was a humble, hard-working man who cared deeply about his family and making his community a better place. From his modest beginnings, it was his sheer will and determination that lifted up himself and his family.  He often had to learn how to do new things, and work with little as he built the family home. Education was demonstrably important to him, as he put himself, wife Charline, and five children through college.  He served 35 years as an elementary teacher and principal, positively impacting the lives of his students and staff.  Delbert was one to lead by example and was willing to sacrifice his time and efforts to further the lives of others.  Throughout his professional and personal life, Delbert was a wonderful example to his children, always striving to leave a legacy behind with them.

Delbert was born in Davison, Michigan on September 24, 1928, one of twelve children. He attended Caro County Normal and began teaching at the age of eighteen with the Deanville School District. In 1949, he became the teaching principal for Ely and Sumner School System.  Four years later, in 1953, Delbert came back to his home area as a teacher and principal at the Burnside country school.  After Burnside consolidated with Brown City in 1965, he became elementary school principal where he would lead until his retirement in 1983.

Delbert enjoyed farming throughout his life and shared his time and knowledge in service as a 4-H sheep club leader for over 20 years.  Delbert had a quiet, but strong faith, and was a lifelong member of the North Branch United Methodist Church. His roles in the Brown City and North Branch communities led to frequent conversations with former students or teachers and others throughout his days, reminiscing about shared times together.  These treasured memories would often end with laughter and smiles exchanged.

Delbert stayed active throughout his 40 years in retirement.  He especially enjoyed time outside on the farm or at the pond.  One of his favorite hobbies was fishing – at the farm pond, on a lake or harbor, or salmon fishing on a river.  He loved woodworking and restoration of farm equipment and other antiques, and built a log cabin where grandchildren played endlessly, building lifelong memories.  Whether parties or gatherings at the pond, to bobsled rides at Christmas, any activities surrounded by family were most precious to him.

Delbert is survived by his loving wife, Charline, of North Branch who served faithfully by his side for 73 years of marriage; Daughter-Sherry and Dave Hoover of Hillman; Daughter-Carolyn Myers of Mayville; Son-Craig and Roxane Myers of Croswell; Son-Phil and Crystal Myers of Columbus, Ohio; Son-Dave and Jen Myers of Alpena; ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. at the North Branch United Methodist Church.
