Arthur (Art) Nicholas Joseph Chartier, 72, of North Branch Michigan, passed away unexpectedly on November 28,, 2022 at Lapeer Regional Medical Center.
Born to Louis and Loretta Chartier in Ferndale Michigan in 1950, Art was the youngest of 11 children (Elmer, Delia, Veronica, Bernadette, David, Charlies, Louie, Leo, Jerry, and Lenny). With such a crowded house, at age 15, Art met the love of his life, Donna Rae Marlin in Cleveland Ohio. Soon after meeting, they were married, had five children (son Terry and daughters Angelina, Janice, Joanna, Bethann) and against the odds remained married, celebrating 55 years of marriage this past summer.
A jack of all trades and master of most, Art did anything he had to and could do to support his family. From auto repair, carpentry, heating and cooling, property maintenance, and even a railroad switch/brakeman for Grand Trunk Railroad his work ethic and drive were defining trait.
While his character and integrity could make him seem gruff and stubborn at times, Art was a compassionate, caring, and selfless soul. He shared his passion for his crafts through mentoring others and would do pretty much anything for anyone that asked. Smart and funny, Art’s wit, storytelling, and charm lit up the room (like his smile) and made him the life of most gatherings. His Art “isms” like nothing good happens after midnight, or you wouldn’t have to cut your lawn so often if you’d stop fertilizing it, always made you think and brought a smile.
Art is survived by his wife Donna; their five children (Terry, Angie, Janice, Joanna, Bethann); brothers Charles and Louie; 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; as well as extended family, friends, and the many that loved him dearly during his life.
Art will be cremated, and his ashes held by his wife Donna. In lieu of flowers or a memorial, the family and Art respectfully ask that individuals wanting to honor his memory to please “adopt” a family in need or contribute to a local food bank during this holiday period. Either, will help create smiles like the one he will be eternally shining down on all of us!
