Lucille June (Atkins) Filkins

Lucille “Lucy” Filkins, age 80 of North Branch passed away on Friday, April 21, 2017 at McLaren Lapeer Region Hospital.  Lucy was born September 5, 1936 in Genesee Twp., Michigan, the daughter of the late Sherman LeRoy and Bessie (Smith) Atkins.  On September 12, 1953 Lucy married Earl Filkins.  Lucy retired from North Branch Area Schools after 20 years of service working as the cookie lady  in the cafeteria.  Lucy enjoyed making cakes for all occasions for over 30 years, crocheting beautiful afghans, playing cards, and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Lucy is survived by her husband, Earl; sons; Leroy (Cheryl) of Davison, Kenneth (Marti) of Sault Sainte Marie, and Douglas (Mary Ann) of Hudsonville; and daughter, Michelle (Mark) Gavalya of Hudsonville; 15 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Pauline (Bruce) Crum of Davison and Maxine (Clyde) Sartor of Attica; brothers, George (Linda) Atkins of North Branch and Aubrey Atkins of Roscommon; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Don; and sister, Eleanor and John Averill; brother-in-law, Kenneth Bell. 

Memorials may be directed to the family.

The family will be present for visitation on Sunday, April 23, 2017 from 4 to 8 PM, and on Monday, April 24, 2017 from 10 to 11 AM.  The Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 AM at Blackburn Chapel-Martin Funeral Home.  Pastor Andrew Filkins will officiate.  Lucy will be laid to rest next to her son Don in Westlawn Cemetery, North Branch.
