CONTACT US CONDOLENCES Marvin Heallead, age 80 Marvin Floyd Hallead, age 80, of North Branch died Thursday, March 4, 2010 at Lapeer Regional Medical Center. Marvin was born to Walter and Hazel Hallead August 20, 1929. He lived and worked in this area all his life. In June of 1951 he married Kathleen Bowman of North Branch. They enjoyed 58 years together. Marvin worked for the North Branch Elevator Co. For 20 years. He also worked for North-Side Co-op Milk Co. And 14 years for the North Branch Schools, retiring in 1991. He enjoyed cutting wood, trimming trees and mowing lawns; just keeping busy in general. He is survived by his wife Kathleen, three sons; Bruce and Pam of Columbiaville, Paul and Cindy of North Branch and Kenneth of North Branch, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one brother-in-law, several nieces and nephews. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, his step-father, Frank Hallead, brother Jim, sister Shirley, sister-in-law Ava and daughter-in-law Susan. In following Marvin’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be 3:00 PM, Sunday, March 7, 2010 at Blackburn Chapel-Martin Funeral Home, with a gathering of family and friends from 1 to 3. Rev. Ronald Hutchinson will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dementia Wing of Lapeer County Medical Care Facility-Suncrest or to the family Elaine "Lanie" Schmidt Elaine "Lanie" Schmidt, age 70 died Friday, February 26, 2010 at her home. Lanie was born January 26, 1940 in Houston, Texas, the daughter of Frank and LaLa "Rawley" Williams, Jr. Lanie grew up in Houston, Texas and graduated in 1958. She received her Bachelors Degree from UCLA in nursing, and worked at UCLA Medical Center for a while. On January 19, 1963 she married Ken Schmidt. Lanie enjoyed traveling to participate in Historical Re-enactment Groups, and the Beletre Group. She was a member of the Daughters of American Revolution, and the Wheeling Team 457. She also enjoyed quilting, spinning, weaving, needlepoint, tanning hides and shooting air rifles. She is survived by her husband Ken, daughter Shelby Gail Norman of Rome, New York, and son K. Morgan (Brenda) Schmidt of St. Clair Shores, 5 sisters, 1 brother and 2 grandsons; Josh and Dakota. She was preceded in death by her father and a grandson. Cremation has taken place.
Alice Irene Lott, age 90 of Flint, MI., was born March 19, 1919 in Flint, Michigan. She was received into the presence of Jesus Christ her Lord, February 23, 2010. Alice was the mother of two sons; David (Donna) Lott of Columbiaville and Robert (Darlene ) Lott of Fostoria, MI. She had five grandchildren; Carrie J. (Chris) Seeley of Hudsonville, MI., Dana S. (John) Strong of Grand Blanc, MI., Joshua (Sara) Lott, Dalton, Minnosota, Josie A. (Scott) Baldree of Fort Worth, Texas, and Jared P. Lott of Fostoria, MI., 10 great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-laws; Geraldine Johnson and Marjorie Needham and many nieces and nephews. Alice was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers. She was a longtime member of the North Baptist Church, Flint, MI. The family will receive guests from 9:00 am to 11:00 am with the funeral service immediately following at 11:00 am, on Friday, February 26, 2010 at the North Baptist Church, 4004 Lennon Road, Flint, MI. 48507. Rev. Dr. Todd Meece will officiate. Interment will be at Sunset Hills Cemetery, Flint, MI. Barbara Rose Mitchell, age 92, of Lapeer, formerly of North Branch died Saturday, January 23, 2010 at McLaren Regional Medical Center. Barbara was born May 25, 1917 in Shiawasee County, Michigan. Barbara grew up in Swartz Creek area and graduated from Mary Crapo High School in 1934. On August 25, 1945 she married Lloyd Mitchell. He preceded her in death in 1998. She was a member of the Fostoria Baptist Church and was attending Grace Baptist Church in Lapeer. Barbara made baby blankets with crocheted edges for all her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends and members of her church. She would make doughnuts for the Red Cross Blood Mobile. Her family and grandchildren were very important part of her life. She is survived by her daughters; Margaret (Denton) Flahault of Indiana, Mary (Dr. Susumu Inoue) Mitchell-Beren of Swartz Creek, Patricia (Elmer) Harvey of Lapeer and Annette (Johnny) DesJardins of North Carolina, son, Robert (Cindy) Mitchell of North Branch, sisters; Julia Lengyel of Cadillac, MI., and Anne Bartlett of Lincoln Nebraska, sisters-in-law; Emma Lengyel of Swartz Creek and Ella Mae Mitchell of Flint, 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren with 2 great-grandsons soon to be born and many nephews and nieces. Betty was born August 4, 1939 in North Branch. She was the daughter of Kenneth J. And Ida (Reynolds) Goss. Betty graduated from North Branch High School in 1956. On Sept. 30, 1957 she married Tom Hennessey. Florence was born July 7, 1922 in Pontiac Twp., MI. She was the daughter of Austin and Marguerite (Calkins) Rossman. She grew up in Pontiac, MI and attended school at Pontiac and North Branch. She graduated from North Branch High School class of 1939. On November 29, 1940 she married Edward Minkstein in North Branch, MI. Florence was a homemaker. She attended the North Branch First United Methodist Church of North Branch. Florence was a member of the North Branch Eastern Stars #149 and the North Branch Sno-Byrds. Florence enjoyed gardening, cooking, birdwatching and spending time with her family. Beverly LaFave, age 81, of North Branch, died Sunday, December 20, 2009 at Lapeer Regional Medical Center. Beverly was born March 29, 1928 in Faribault, Minnesota, the daughter of Verle and Millie (Eire) Shepard. On April 6, 1950 she married Dale LaFave in Detroit, MI. He preceded her in death in May 2007. Bev was a member of the North Branch Eastern Stars #149. She enjoyed traveling, camping, working on crafts and entertaining friends and family on her swing at her home. Left to cherish her memory are daughters; Diane (Richard) White, Denise (Tom) Patrick, son Leonard LaFave, 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, sister Bonnie Powell and sisters-in-law; Patty Shepard, Tillie LaFave, and Darlene LaFave, many nieces and nephews. Pauline was born February 25, 1916 in Arlee, Saskatchewan, Canada, she was the daughter of Jno and Kathryn Karpow. Pauline married John Deshetsky on March 11, 1939 in Detroit, Michigan. Pauline was a busy homemaker taking care of her family and she was known as “Grandma Cooker” by many. Pauline was a member of the North Branch First Baptist Church and she was a Past Member of the Russian Ukranian Baptist Church of Detroit. Our memories of Pauline will be greatly cherished by her family and friends. Mark was born October 9, 1953 in Flint, Michigan, the son of John and Beverly (FitzGerald) Grimes. He grew up in Vassar and attended school there. He married Carol Hallock on March 6, 1980 in Lapeer. Mark was the President/Owner of Precision Machining Co. since 1986. Laur, age 78 of North Branch died Saturday, November 21, 2009 at McLaren Regional Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Duane was born November 23, 1930 in the son of Francis and Edith (Arndt) Laur. He grew up in North Branch and graduated from North Branch High School. He attended Michigan State College. On August 3, 1957 he married Ruth Ann O’Neill in the North Branch United Methodist Church. Duane was a life-long beef and crop farmer. He attended North Branch United Methodist Church and was a member for over 50 years where he sang in the choir. He was a member of Farm Bureau, Farmland Preservation and a former member of the Deerfield Township Planning Commission. Duane will be lovingly missed by his six children: Diane and husband Don Kennedy of Lapeer, William and wife Kim Laur of North Branch, Donna and husband Mike Seeley of Fenton, Dan and wife Marlena Laur of North Branch, Doris and husband David Hill of North Branch, and Dale and wife Patty Laur of North Branch; sister: Marjorie Albrecht of North Branch; special friend, Mary Barber of Columbiaville; 18 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Duane is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Ann in 1995; his brother, William and his sister, Elaine. The family suggests memorials to the North Branch United Methodist Church. Lucille Fricke, age 89 of North Branch died Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Lucille was born October 7, 1920 in Detroit, MI. the daughter of John Stanley and Nellie Mae (Burnside) Rosolowski. Lucille spent most of her life in North Branch and attended school there. On April 20, 1938 she married Edward E. Fricke in Lapeer. Lucille attended SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in North Branch. Lucille was proud to have lived to see the 5th generation of the Fricke-Ragatz family. She enjoyed BINGO and playing cards. She was a loving care giver to many. Most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren. Lucille will be missed by her daughter, Jean (Walter) Ragatz of North Branch, son, Francis (Judith) Fricke of Kingston, 5 granddaughters, 4 grandsons, 5 great-granddaughters, 7 great-grandsons, 1 great-great-grandson and her God child, Suzanne. Lucille is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Edward; grandsons: Randy Joliceour, John Terranova and Walter Ragatz; siblings: Vincent Ross, Floyd Ross, Blanch Thompson, Daloris Tashnier, Nellie Moore and Edsel Ross. Burial will be in SS Peter and Paul Cemetery in North Branch. Pauline Kula, age 85, of North Branch died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009 at the Marlette United Hospice. She was born on October 19, 1924 the daughter of George and Cecilia (Schmitt) Wendling.Pauline and Carl Robinet were united in marriage on May 18, 1946. They made their home in Kings Mill, Michigan for many years with their family, before moving to the Wendling family homestead on Summers Road. Pauline enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable gardens, and helping on the farm. She had a special talent of writing short stories and articles for local newspapers. She worked at Lapeer General Hospital in the Housekeeping Department and was a care giver and companion for many seniors later in her life. She also volunteered her time at the Marlette Extended Care Facility mending the resident’s clothing. Pauline was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where she was a member of the choir and Lector.After the death of Carl Robinet on March 21, 1983, Pauline married Paul Kreiner on August 9, 1991, Paul died February 2, 1992. She married Walter Kula, on May 1, 1994, and he died on Sept. 11, 2005.She is survived by daughter Rose Marie (David) Shoemaker of Marlette, sons; George (Elaine) of Attica, William and Thomas of North Branch, sister Rita Zmudka of Dearborn and brother-in-law Louis Robinet of North Branch, grandchildren; Kevin, Christine, and Keith and Deanna, David Jr., and Daniel, many step-children and their families and many nieces and nephews.Pauline was preceded in death by her husbands, and daughter Cecilia.The family will be present on Sunday, November 15, 2009 from 6 to 8, Monday, November 16, 2009 from 1 to 8 with a Rosary at 4:00 pm, and Tuesday, she will lie in state from 10 to 11 at St. Mary’s Church with the funeral mass to follow. Fr. Richard Treml will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, North Branch.Memorials may be made to the Glenn Mary Sisters.
